New Members & the Pentecost Spirit

Acts chapter 2 talks about the very first Christian church in Jerusalem after the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost: “Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done….And day by day, the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.”  This same awe-inspiring and saving Spirit is blowing at Edgcumbe Presbyterian Church two thousand years after those words were written.

After a spirit-filled New Member Exploration class in April, these folk committed to joining the fellowship of believers here at EPC:

Heather and Fred Clary, with children Chloe and Cali

Lorenz Fett, with child Cora

Cindy Hanson

Brian Manwarren

Dick and Liz Levings

Marilyn Monson

Eleta Pierce, with children Christopher and Tierra

Jennifer and Jim Turnure, with child Maggie

That is eleven adults plus nine children (when you count Isaac, Micah, and Lydia GebbenGreen, who will be joining our baptismal roll at the same time) for a total of 20 new people.  Thanks be to God!

All of these people cannot join on the same Sunday, so the first celebration of baptism and joining will be on Sunday, May 11, Pentecost Sunday, with a second celebration held on June 15, an outdoor worship Sunday (weather permitting).

We warmly welcome these new disciples into our midst and pray that Edgcumbe Church might be a blessing to them just as they are a blessing to the church.

Exciting Up-Coming Sundays at EPC

Sunday, May 4 – BAPTISM FORUM, immediately following worship in the Parlor.  For everyone exploring baptism for themselves or their children, this is an
opportunity to check in with  the pastors about the meaning and details of
baptism at EPC.

Sunday, May 11 – PENTECOST SUNDAY marks the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church.  It is a great day to wear your brightest clothes to church to celebrate the dynamic and diverse nature of the Spirit.  On this Sunday we will also honor Mamas (it’s Mother’s Day) and celebrate the sacrament of baptism and take in new members (see cover article).

Sunday, May 18 – MUSIC APPRECIATION SUNDAY.  On this day we will sing lots of hymns, listen to lots of special music, and say Thank You to our staff musicians and choir for another wonderful year of leading our ministry of music.  May God be glorified in our music!

Sunday, June 15 – OUTDOOR WORSHIP & BAPTISM.  This summer we plan to worship outdoors (weather permitting) on the third Sunday of each month—June 15, July 20, and August 17.  On July 15 we have the added treat of celebrating baptism and taking in more new members.  In July and August we will ask neighboring congregations to join us in our beautiful backyard to worship God together.

Beginning May 27, there will be new office hours.

The times are as follows:

                            Monday:                         Tuesday - Friday:

9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.          9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

All-Church Workday

Saturday, May 17, 10am-2pm

It is time for some Spring cleaning at EPC.  We could use as many people as possible, young and old, on Saturday, May 17, for a variety of projects around the church:

N    outdoor clean-up and replanting

N    cleaning and organizing in kitchen, closets and basement

N    group decision-making about what to keep and what to toss

N  maybe some painting, inside and outside

N  fellowship and fun and food (pizza lunch around noon)

Wear some grubby clothes, bring your whole family, and make sure to sign up in the narthex or call the church office so we can know how many people will be there.  John Austin will be in charge of the outdoor work on the grounds—please talk to John if can donate any plants to the cause.
